Ethan's 2nd Visit to the ER

Definitely not the call a parent wants to receive... "Ethan fell at school. He has calmed down but his mouth continues to bleed..." I rushed to school to pick him up and he was sitting at the table crying.

When I saw him I couldn't stop myself from crying ether (and being 9 1/2 months pregnant didn't help). His tongue was bleeding and his teeth looked like they also had blood on them. I tried to embrace my inner toughness, gave him a hug, told him all would be okay, and then rushed to the doctor.

At the doctor, he was inconsolable. He kept saying ,"Go home! Almost done? Open door." The doctor thought we might need stitches so urged us to go to the emergency room. Clearly this wasn't an ideal way to spend an afternoon but we jumped into a cab and headed up to Methodist. We jumped from doctor to doctor and all seemed to think he was going to need stitches and would need to be put under.

Ethan was exhausted and lying in Michael's arms wanting to go to sleep. He finally fell asleep as we were waiting for the dentist to look at him. The dentist also agree that it seemed like stitches were the way to go and urged us either to go to the OR or to head to a pediatric dentist. We decided on the latter and headed up to another hospital. While there, they thankfully said that everything looked good and that he didn't need to get any stitches. They said that his mouth would heal and that we should feed him soft substances and come back on Monday. The worst part was how sad he was about it. He would get better and then cry again and each time he cried he said, "I cry" in the most heartbroken little voice. Ugh. I hated every minute of it.

To be honest, I got even more sad thinking about how lucky we were at that point--it was a fall that was not major and Ethan would be fine. There are so many families and kids who are sick and who need to be in the hospital for extended times--that to me would be so incredibly difficult and I ablown away by the strength that these families need to have.

We went back on Monday and the doctor said it was healing wonderfully. Ethan was thrilled with his newest toy from Aunt Alison and showed off his cut on his tongue. During our wait at the hospital, Ethan continued to want to lie on the floor much to my chagrin playing with his trains. There were many parents who giggled at my disgust at the germ-filled floors and finally I just gave up. He just got a majorly hot bath when he got home.

All in all we are thankful that all was okay and that Baby #2 waited until after this fiasco to join us!
