This is clearly not a first I would like to repeat, but our poor little man started off last night with a sudden bout of congestion. I tried the
Nose Frida to extract any mucous, but nothing would come out. He seemed to eat and sleep okay, but it was really difficult to sleep next to him because we were worried about the rattling we kept hearing in Ethan's chest. His congestion seemed to get worse throughout the night and it sounded like he had fluid in his throat/lungs. Finally, at 3:30, it got to me and I was worried about him. His breathing sounded a bit more labored and he started crying more when he was put down to sleep. As you can imagine, I was freaking out so we called our pediatrician who said that it likely was a cold, but that if we wanted peace of mind and couldn't tell if it was purely nasal or chest congestion, we should get it looked at either at Urgent Care or at the ER. We decided to go to the ER to be safe (and because I don't think I could have waited five hours until Urgent Care opened) so we went to Methodist a few blocks away. I was fully prepared to be the rookie parents who were overreacting, but wanted to be safe.
Long story short, everything is okay and it seems like Ethan just has some sort of cold. They told us to run a humidifier, give him saline drops, and try to extract whatever mucous you could after the drops. Not only does Ethan have his first cold, but the tears actually fell from his eyes today! A double whammy for me. As I was crying in the hospital, the nurse was incredibly sweet and said, "And now it begins. Your son will get sick. Your son will fall down. Your son will get hurt. Your son will have his heart broken. Your son will break someone's heart. But you will be there to help. That's part of life." Of course my blubbering continued after that (and does each time I read it!).
We've spent our Sunday relaxing with our new frog humidifier. Hopefully this knocks the yuckiness out of him...

| A life saver (and no filter so it doesn't get moldy!). Genius. |
